An accident occurred at the Rogun HPP
A video showing an emergency situation and water flowing down at the construction site of the Rogun HPP in Tajikistan was circulated on social networks. Sources reported that at least five people were injured as a result of the incident.
On October 28, the government of Tajikistan provided information regarding the accident that occurred a week earlier.
The incident occurred on October 21 at approximately 16:15 during cementing work in Section "B" of the HPP, in the construction tunnel on the fourth level. As a result of a reservoir breach, technical water flowed down onto the workers in the tunnel.
"The incident occurred at the exit part of the tunnel, in the area of platforms No. 32 and 33. At that time, workers of the subcontractor company Sino Hydro were there. Technical water poured over them," the department's statement said.
According to official data, two water collection reservoirs are located in this part of the tunnel. After the upper reservoir burst, the lower water discharge reservoir was also damaged. As a result, the water from both reservoirs simultaneously flowed down into the lower part of the tunnel where the workers were located.
It was noted that none of the workers suffered physical injuries as a result of the incident; they received first aid and returned to work.
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (Ozodlik), citing its source, reported that at least five workers of the hydroelectric power station were injured as a result of the incident.
A working group has been formed to determine the causes of the incident and to prevent such situations. Specialists are studying the technical condition of water collection reservoirs at production facilities, the reliability of anchor fastenings, and compliance with safety requirements.
This is not the first time
The issue of safety at the Rogun HPP construction site has been raised in previous years as well. In particular, in November 2024, three workers were killed and another person was injured as a result of an accident at the construction site.
Discussions regarding safety issues continued in 2025 as well. An employee of an Iranian company participating in the project suggested that low-quality materials were being used.
