The European country with the highest number of tax types has been identified
Based on data collected by Tax Policy Associates, the number of individual taxes in European countries was compared
According to it, France stands out significantly from other European countries with 348 individual taxes. Denmark, in second place, has 132 types of taxes. The average figure across Europe is around 90.
Out of the 348 taxes in France, 243 fall into the category of taxes that yield low revenue relative to the budget. The main part of the country's budget revenues is formed by major tax types.
In particular, in 2024, more than 800 billion euros were received from labor-related taxes, and nearly 300 billion euros from taxes on goods and services.
The high number of taxes in France is also explained by narrow sector-specific levies introduced in different periods. Among them are special taxes and levies related to insurance, professional training, chambers of commerce and industry, nuclear energy, and gambling.
The Baltic states are located at the bottom of the ranking. 54 individual taxes were recorded in Latvia, and 35 in Lithuania. Estonia has 34 taxes, which is the lowest figure among the compared European countries.
At the same time, the number of individual taxes does not directly indicate how high or low the overall tax burden in the country is. This indicator, first of all, allows for a comparison of the structure and complexity of the national tax system.
