American scientists have found that expanding green space in cities helps reduce mortality, especially in regions with higher temperatures. The researchers reached this conclusion after analyzing data from Chicago neighborhoods for the period 2011 to 2021.

The study examined information on the number of trees, temperature conditions, causes of death, and other characteristics of various urban neighborhoods. It was found that an annual increase in green space by just 0.03% could prevent more than 100 deaths per year. The expansion of parkland led to a significant reduction in deaths caused by cardiovascular, pulmonary, and joint diseases, and severe mental disorders.

The most pronounced effect was observed in the hottest areas of Chicago. There, tree loss correlated with an increase in deaths over time. The study's authors emphasize that trees help cool urban environments, and green spaces can also reduce stress and encourage healthier lifestyles.

However, the study did not confirm that the mere presence of trees in an area automatically leads to reduced mortality. A more significant factor was the increase in green cover over time and the preservation of existing trees.

Scientists believe that planting and preserving trees, especially in the hottest areas, can be an effective tool for protecting the health of city residents and helping cities adapt to rising temperatures. Trees protect people from heatstroke, filter dangerous air pollutants, and effectively reduce stress.

It was previously reported that July 2026 in Uzbekistan was significantly hotter than the climate norm: in most regions, the average temperature was 1.3–2.3 degrees Celsius above normal, and in Uchkuduk, the air warmed up to a record-breaking 49.7 degrees Celsius. In Tashkent, the temperature reached 44.3 degrees on July 19, while in the south and desert regions, up to 23 days with temperatures above 40 degrees were recorded.
