Israeli chess players missed a round of the Olympiad due to a national holiday

The Israeli national team did not participate in the 6th round of the 46th World Chess Olympiad due to Yom Kippur (the holiest holiday in Judaism). This was reported by the press service of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

In the 6th round of the tournament, which is continuing in Samarkand until September 28, the Israeli men's team was scheduled to play against the Netherlands, and the women's team against Bulgaria.

According to FIDE, since Yom Kippur fell on September 20 and 21, the Israeli side requested changes to the match schedule. In the 5th round, the opponents of the Israeli teams agreed to start the matches earlier than usual. For this reason, the men's match between Israel and Singapore and the women's match between Israel and Colombia were moved to another hotel.

For the 6th round, the Israeli side proposed to start the matches later or to move them to September 22 — the rest day at the Olympiad. However, when FIDE contacted the opponents of the two Israeli teams, they did not agree to play at any time other than the official schedule.

The FIDE press service noted that the opposing teams have the right to reject such a proposal.

Therefore, if the Israeli teams cannot start the 6th round matches at the scheduled time, these matches will be canceled in accordance with the tournament regulations.
