Irish police social media accounts breached by hackers

Several social media accounts used by An Garda Síochána, the Irish police, appear to have been hacked and turned to promoting cryptocurrency.

According to Irish broadcaster RTÉ, the @GardaTraffic and @GardaInfo X accounts removed Garda branding and started posting cryptocurrency promotions on Wednesday night.

Some of the posts on the accounts were marked with warnings saying they are connected to another suspended profile, while the accounts’ location was changed to Amsterdam.

On Wednesday morning, the @GardaTraffic account, which has 600,000 followers, still said it was the Garda account for traffic and road safety updates.

The @GardaInfo account, which has almost 300,000 followers, is not displaying any biographical information, although older An Garda Síochána posts remain visible on the account.
