Instagram turns 16!
Launched on October 6, 2010, Instagram is celebrating its 16th anniversary today. What once started as a simple mobile app created solely for photo sharing has now transformed into a global media space with over 3 billion active users.
The history of Instagram begins in October 2010 with a photo-sharing app created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Just two years later, in 2012, Facebook, now Meta, acquired Instagram for nearly $1 billion. At that time, Instagram was still a photo app that did not generate significant revenue. Today, however, it is considered one of Meta's most important products.
Instagram reached the milestone of 2 billion active users in 2022. In September 2025, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the platform's audience had reached 3 billion active users. This means another 1 billion users were added in less than three years.
The change in format played a major role in Instagram's rapid growth. While the initial focus was on photos, later video, Stories, Direct, and especially the short video format — Reels — became the main driving forces of the platform.
Reels was launched in 2020 as a short video format to compete with TikTok. Today, Instagram is not just a social network where photos are posted, but a massive ecosystem that combines video, advertising, influencers, online shopping, and the content creator economy.
Instagram's reach in Uzbekistan is also significant. According to DataReportal and Kepios, at the end of 2025, Meta's advertising tools showed an audience of 14.1 million for Instagram in Uzbekistan. This is equivalent to approximately 37.9 percent of the country's population. Among internet users, Instagram's advertising reach stood at 42.6 percent.
At the same time, one should not rush to interpret this figure as 14.1 million unique active users. DataReportal notes that this indicator represents the audience reach in Meta's advertising tools, which is not directly equivalent to the number of monthly active users.
In 2026, thousands of lawsuits continue in the US against Meta regarding the impact of Instagram and other platforms on teenagers' mental health. The lawsuits claim that mechanisms designed to keep users engaged longer — features such as infinite scroll, autoplay, and notifications — are causing excessive use among young people. Meta, however, denies these allegations and states that it is introducing new tools for teen safety.
In addition, in August 2026, Meta agreed to a maximum settlement of $16.68 billion in lawsuits brought by 29 US states. The settlement also entails introducing additional restrictions on teen usage of Facebook and Instagram, including daily usage limits and nighttime lockouts. The company, however, did not admit fault.
Meanwhile, Instagram's new features are not escaping the scrutiny of regulators either. On October 6, 2026, the UK media regulator Ofcom announced that it would investigate whether Meta had sufficiently assessed the risks related to children and illegal content before launching its Instants feature on Instagram.
Instagram's 16-year history demonstrates an important shift for technology companies: as the content consumed by users changed, the platform itself changed as well.
In 2010, Instagram was just a mobile app designed for photos. In 2026, it is:
— A global platform with an active audience of over 3 billion;
— A major arena for video and short-form content;
— An essential part of the influencer and content creator economy;
— A key player in the multi-billion dollar advertising market;
— At the same time, a tech giant under intense regulatory scrutiny regarding data privacy and youth safety.
It is worth noting that Instagram's 16th anniversary is not just the birthday of a social network. It is the history of how a small app once created to store and share photos on a smartphone became a global digital infrastructure of 3 billion people.
