India trade an 'opportunity' for Jersey businesses
Jersey was included in the UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement.

For businesses in Jersey, a new avenue of opportunity may be opening up in India, as the island has become part of a trade agreement between the UK and the South Asian nation, according to government ministers.
The "UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement" became effective on July 15th. This pact is designed to reduce trade barriers for Jersey-based companies looking to export their products to India.
A report from the States of Jersey regarding the agreement highlighted that Jersey's participation offers "scope for future growth and development of stronger trading links over time." The report characterized India as "a potential opportunity for Jersey businesses," pointing to its substantial consumer market of 1.47 billion people and robust economic growth.
Currently, trade between Jersey and India is relatively "modest," as noted in the report. From 2018 to 2022, imports from India to Jersey, primarily clothing and jewelry, were valued at approximately £630,000. In contrast, exports from Jersey to India, largely finance-related products such as card readers, amounted to about £16,500.
Following the agreement, the government plans to "raise awareness of the opportunity" and "assess interest from firms on island."
The report also assured that existing regulations would continue to prevent the entry of harmful products into Jersey, including those containing banned pesticides or growth hormones associated with health risks.
Ministers emphasized the importance of this deal in maintaining Jersey's alignment with the UK and other Crown dependencies on trade matters. The report further cautioned that not being included in such agreements could, over time, "create divergence within the UK Crown Dependencies Customs Union."
