In Uzbekistan, a child will be allowed to take his father's surname.
The new law allows a child to be given a surname based on their father's or grandfather's name, taking into account national traditions, and changes the rules for archival matters.
Uzbekistan is introducing a new rule allowing children to have a surname derived from their father's name, as well as from the name of their paternal or maternal grandfather, in accordance with national traditions. These changes are enshrined in Law No. ZRU-1164, adopted on August 13, 2026.
The amendments were made to the Family Code, as the legislation previously did not provide for such a possibility. Parents will now be able to choose a surname for their child based on the father's or grandfather's name, which is consistent with national customs.
In addition to the amendments to the Family Code, the law also regulates archival matters, establishing the procedure for creating electronic and non-state archives.
Strict requirements are imposed on electronic archives: they must be equipped with the necessary hardware, software, and tools for creating electronic archival collections and documents, including equipment and software for digitizing them. Electronic archives are also required to support the search, management, and processing of archival documents, guarantee the identity of the electronic document with its original, and comply with information and cybersecurity requirements.
The law also permits the creation of non-state archives that will be able to collect, record, store, and use documents included in the non-state portion of the National Archival Fund, as well as other archival documents not considered state property.
The document also clarifies the powers of the Ministry of Justice in the area of archival affairs.
Law No. ZRU-1164 shall enter into force upon its official publication.
