In Tashkent, a fake banker gained access to company accounts and stole 2 billion sums

In the Uchtepa district of Tashkent, a man suspected of embezzling nearly two billion sums from the accounts of 19 business entities was detained. According to investigators, he posed as a bank operator and gained access to company funds under the pretext of fixing technical errors in money transfers.

According to the Cybercrime Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan, the suspect is a 29-year-old native of the Tashkent region with multiple prior convictions. He introduced himself as a bank employee who helps resolve glitches in money transfer applications.

Entrepreneurs contacted him via Telegram to report transfer issues. The man promised technical assistance, after which, according to the department, he used specialized software to steal money from the companies' bank accounts.

A criminal case has been initiated regarding this fact under the relevant articles of the Criminal Code. The suspect was detained pursuant to Article 221 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Investigative actions are ongoing.

Earlier in Uzbekistan, the activities of a criminal group were uncovered whose members, posing as bank employees, stole money from citizens' cards and took out online loans in their names.
