Iñárritu, Tom Cruise, and Brad Pitt's dog: what's showing in cinemas in October?
In October, the film 'Digger' starring Tom Cruise began showing in cinemas. Although the picture did not appeal to critics, director Sarvar Karimov believes it is worth watching. The new episode of 'Kinotavsiya' talks about this and other premieres.

Iñárritu, Tom Cruise, and Brad Pitt's dog: what is showing in cinemas in October?
In October, every moviegoer can find a film to their taste and interest in cinemas. The lineup includes pictures featuring major Hollywood stars, blockbusters based on games and comic books, a historical epic, family animated films, and stories dedicated to the relationship between humans and dogs. Horror fans will not be bored this month either: venomous spiders and a cursed Indonesian bridge await them.
What happens when three masters of their craft, true grandmasters of creation, come together in one place?
The film "Digger" is born. The picture is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, with cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki, and starring Tom Cruise in the lead role. The film is showing in Uzbekistan cinemas from October 1.
The plot of this film has been kept secret. Even its trailers turned out very unusual and intriguing. The only thing known is that Tom Cruise portrays one of the most powerful men in the world and attempts to undo the consequences of a natural disaster that he himself caused, which is capable of destroying the planet.
"Yes, film critics received the movie poorly, a lot of criticism poured in. I watched the film yesterday and I liked it. The director used the 'mise en abyme' technique in this film. That is, using another work inside the work. How does this work in cinema? There is another plot inside the plot. I won't spoiler it, see for yourself, because this was not in the trailers. I didn't understand it at first myself and was a bit bewildered," says Sarvar Karimov.
The film is a political satire reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove." Several Hollywood stars participated in it. For example, John Goodman played the US President. In addition, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Emma D'Arcy, and many other actors and actresses worked on the film.
Tom Cruise, who is now 65 years old, spent hours in makeup to create the 65-year-old character Digger. He embodied the image of Digger Rockwell, a money-hungry billionaire who loves no living creature except his cat and listens to no one but himself.
"Many people are talking about the possibility that Tom Cruise might win an Oscar for this role. It is possible, because Cruise is a very good actor; he has been nominated for this award 4 times during his career, but unfortunately did not win. Yes, he has one Oscar, but that is an honorary Oscar given for his overall career in cinema. Because Tom Cruise is not only an actor, but also a producer," says Sarvar Karimov.
The film's director, Alejandro González Iñárritu, has 5 Oscars, and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki has 3 Oscars. Most interestingly, they won them consecutively: in 2014, 2015, and 2016, for the films "Gravity," "Birdman," and "The Revenant."
"In general, I love Alejandro González Iñárritu very much. Back during our institute days, we watched his 'Trilogy of Death' with great interest. Even in the first part of 'The Magic Hat', in the scene where Hoshimjon sits watching TV in the hotel, I used a frame from his film 'Amores Perros'. While most people recognized Iñárritu after 'Birdman' and 'The Revenant', we, his true fans, have been following his work for 20 years."
James Gunn is expanding the DC universe. Have you watched the "Green Lantern" series?
"This time a feature film was shot, and a new character appeared in it — Clayface. James Gunn himself has a habit of finding such forgotten characters and making them famous. For example, no one knew the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' before the movie either. Let's see if it works out this time," says Sarvar Karimov.
The director of this film, which has body horror elements, is James Watkins.
"I watched his debut film — 'Eden Lake'. It was a good film, an old, dear British slasher. We hope Clayface will become one of the successful steps in the plan to bring DC out of crisis. Perhaps James Gunn has a plan in his head to reform DC and superheroes in general that we may not yet understand. We'll see!" says Sarvar Karimov.
Have you seen "Fury," the film about tank crews starring Brad Pitt? That film was shot by a director named David Ayer. This time, collaborating with Brad Pitt again, he made a film called "Wild Heart." The entire movie consists of Brad Pitt and a dog.
"To be honest, this picture reminded me of our good old 90s movies. It was actually shot out in the mountains and rocks, not in a green room. A simple, but good movie turned out. Watch it, you might even have a good cry at the end. After all, Brad Pitt is Brad Pitt," says Sarvar Karimov.
Once upon a time, a movie called "Street Fighter" starring Jean-Claude Van Damme was shot. This picture was based on a game like "Mortal Kombat." Just as "Mortal Kombat" was remade recently, now a new "Street Fighter" is coming out this month.
"In my opinion, this movie should be watched right away. At least out of respect for 50 Cent. He played the black boxer character from the game named Balrog," says Sarvar Karimov.
A two-part historical film telling the life of the famous French figure General Charles de Gaulle was shot in co-production between France, Belgium, and the USA. Now the first part of this epic is being shown in our cinemas.
"If by chance you like movies about World War II or are generally interested in history, do not miss this picture. As a reminder, France was occupied by Nazi Germany in a short period during World War II. Charles de Gaulle was dissatisfied with this, founded the 'Free France' patriotic movement, subsequently liberated his homeland from the Fascists, and after a short time became the president of the country. A truly remarkable personality, this man's life was worthy of becoming a movie, and now we can go to the cinema and watch it," says Sarvar Karimov.
For family viewing this month, the film "At Grandpa's in the Village. Supermission" from Dutch creators can be recommended. Also, a joint French and Belgian product — "The Miraculous Pencil" — is being presented to viewers. In it, a little girl gets hold of a magic pencil, and whatever is written with it comes true.
Additionally, a modern 3D version of the Soviet cartoon — the animated film "The Adventures of the Little Mammoth. In Search of Mom" — is being shown in our cinemas. With children aged 6–7, another animated film produced by Germany and the Czech Republic — "Underwater Brothers. Reef Guards" — can be watched.
Are you a fan of "Hachi: A Dog's Tale"? Then the film "A Dog Named Gohan" from Thai filmmakers is for you. The picture tells the adventures of a white dog named Gohan; unlike "Hachi," Gohan has as many as three owners.
"The Thai people make such heart-wrenching, tear-jerking clips very well, and we hope they shot the movie with the same skill," says Sarvar Karimov.
The plot of the film "Attack" presented by A24 studio is very simple. A mother and her daughter fight against evil robots. In short, someone runs, someone chases. If you like ride-like movies in the horror, sci-fi, action, and thriller genres — don't miss it.
"A new star is shining in the Hollywood sky, and his name is Austin Abrams. Remember it, folks. I saw this young actor for the first time in the movie 'Wolfs.' Back then, I was amazed that he didn't get lost alongside two giants — George Clooney and Brad Pitt. This actor truly has talent, and later a series of films starring him were shot," says Sarvar Karimov.
"Verity" is Anne Hathaway's fifth premiere this year. In this thriller genre film, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, familiar to millennials, played the main roles. This month, the comedy "Spa Weekend," intended for a female audience, also hit the big screens.
The film "Stepmother," starring Oscar winner Jessica Chastain in the lead role, will be shown this month. Another film for horror enthusiasts — "Arachnid" — will also hit the big screens.
"Are you afraid of spiders? Neighbors living in a high-rise building are forced to be locked in quarantine and left face-to-face with thousands of venomous spiders. The reason for this is a man who returned from an overseas trip and unwittingly brought a venomous spider in his bag. The spiders multiply and begin to overtake the complex. The government locks the building in quarantine to prevent the spiders from spreading across the entire country. Doesn't it remind you of anything?" says Sarvar Karimov.
For fans of Indonesian horror, a film titled "Tumbal Proyek" (in Uzbek "Loyiha qurboni", in Russian "Final Destination: Bridge No. 13") is being shown this month. Naturally, this film has nothing to do with the "Final Destination" franchise.
"The title of the picture was translated that way simply so that more people would come to the cinema. According to the plot, many people die due to an accident during the construction of a huge bridge. But is this really an accident, or is the writing a trick of evil spirits?" says Sarvar Karimov.
