Huge Viking treasure found in Denmark
The largest Viking Age silver hoard in Danish history has been discovered in a park in northern Jutland. The total weight of the silver is 18.5 kilograms and consists of more than 700 pieces.
A huge Viking-era treasure has been found in Denmark. A resident of the municipality of Rebil was digging in his yard to build a new porch when he came across a pottery vessel and metal objects scattered around it.
At first, he thought his shovel had hit the remains of an old fence or fragments of pottery. But he continued digging with his hands and found silver jewelry, coins and ingots.
Representatives of the North Jutland Historical Museum say that the find is important for understanding how silver was used in the 10th century and how the Vikings stored their wealth. The silver ingots are arranged in a vessel according to their weight, which may indicate that their value was also taken into account.
The treasure also contains Arab and Anglo-Saxon coins. English coins were minted during the reign of King Edward, that is, from 899 to 924. Arab coins were also in circulation in the 10th century. Therefore, scientists believe that this treasure dates back to the 10th century.
