A rise in hospitality and education hiring helped the US economy add tens of thousands more jobs than expected last month, according to the latest figures.
The number of jobs created in the world’s biggest economy rose by 162,000 in August, nearly three times the 56,000 predicted by analysts.
The increase was driven by higher employment in restaurants and bars during the final month of summer, along with local government education hiring ahead of the new school year.
The stronger employment data is likely to reinforce expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates later this month.
Earlier weaker job numbers released in the summer were also revised upward, pointing to a labour market that is stronger than previously believed.
