Four Russian clubs may participate in European competitions in the 2027/28 season

If UEFA lifts the restrictions imposed on Russian clubs and national teams, four clubs from the country may participate in European competitions in the 2027/28 season. This is noted in the documents published by UEFA.

According to the document, the champion of Russia of the 2026/2027 season will participate from the 1st qualifying round of the Champions League. The winner of the country's Cup will take the field in the 1st qualifying round of the Europa League.

The clubs that finish in 2nd and 3rd places in the Russian championship may join the competition from the 2nd qualifying round of the Conference League. The UEFA document states that this is currently a preliminary step, and the final decision will be made by the end of the season.

For information, Russian national teams and clubs have not participated in international competitions since 2022. On August 27, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said that the issue of returning Russian national teams and clubs to competitions could be considered after the conflict in Ukraine ends.

As a reminder, FIFA and UEFA suspended Russian national teams and clubs from international competitions for an indefinite period in February 2022 due to the events in Ukraine.
