Former party chief of Hubei province sentenced to death in China.

The former secretary of the Communist Party of China in Hubei province has been sentenced to death for taking bribes worth $111 million, Reuters reported.

The Nanjing Municipal People's Court sentenced Jiang Chaoliang. According to the case file, he was found guilty of taking bribes worth more than 746 million yuan. The court postponed the execution of the sentence for two years.

If Chaoliang does not commit new crimes within this period, the death sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment. In this case, he will not be released early or his sentence will be reduced.

Chaoliang served as party secretary from October 2016 to February 2020. Before that, he held such positions as governor of Jilin province, governor of the Agricultural Bank of China, president of the China Development Bank and chairman of the Bank of Communications.

Investigators say he used his position to secure contracts and help various companies and individuals from 1995 to 2025.

Earlier, it was reported that a former official accused of corruption worth $41 million had been sentenced to death. Long Xiang, the former head of the Nanjing Municipal People's Council, was sentenced to two years' probation for bribery, embezzlement, abuse of power and insider trading. The court deprived him of political rights for life and ordered the confiscation of all his personal assets to the state.
