Former head of China Eastern Airlines jailed for bribery
Liu Shaoyun, former chairman of the board of China's China Eastern Airlines, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for taking more than 67.5 million yuan (about $10 million) in bribes.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court also fined Liu Shaoyun 4 million yuan (about $600,000). The illegally obtained funds and accrued interest were confiscated and transferred to the state account.
The court found that during his tenure in executive positions at China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines from 2002 to 2023, Liu Shaoyun assisted organizations and individuals in conducting business, concluding contracts, and managing flights. In exchange, he received bribes totaling more than 67.5 million yuan.
In passing the sentence, the court took into account that after his arrest, Liu confessed to his crimes, provided information about circumstances previously unknown to the investigation, admitted his guilt and expressed remorse for his actions, and also returned the illegally obtained funds. These circumstances served as grounds for mitigating the punishment.
