Firm announces £57m boost for Prestwick aircraft repair facility
GE Aerospace builds and repairs private, commercial and military planes
An aerospace company has revealed a £57m investment in aircraft maintenance facilities beside Prestwick Airport.
GE Aerospace is putting £30m into expanding and modernising its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) site in the South Ayrshire town.
The plans include a new building measuring 55,000 sq ft (5109 sq m). The project is expected to be finished by the beginning of 2028.
The scheme is backed by £27m from the Ayrshire Growth Deal, while Scottish Enterprise has also planned a £6m investment.
About 150 new jobs are expected to be created over the next five years.
GE Aerospace said the upgrade will increase capacity and "operational flow" at the site, allowing it to better serve customers across the company's commercial MRO network.
Andy Prow, site leader at GE Aerospace in Prestwick, said: "This investment reflects GE Aerospace's commitment to our customers and to the future of our Prestwick site.
"By expanding and modernising the facility with the help of government partners, we are improving capacity, operational flow and readiness for future demand, while helping hire and train additional workers from the area."
South Ayrshire Council leader Brian Connolly called the investment a "major milestone" for the Ayrshire Growth Deal, which will "significantly benefit" the local and national economy.
GE Aerospace has also announced a £75,000 donation to Ayrshire College to fund new training equipment for around 150 students and apprentices, which it said would help secure the next generation of aerospace skills.
The funding will also support a course designed to prepare students for careers in the wider aerospace industry.
Deputy First Minister Jenny Gilruth said the "major expansion" would be a real boost for the local economy.
She said: "It is also a vote of confidence in Scotland's workforce, and our support for this expansion clearly demonstrates our commitment to build on the strengths of our advanced manufacturing and engineering sectors, as well as stressing the importance of the aerospace sector."
UK minister Melanie Ward said the UK government has also invested £32m in the Ayrshire growth deal to deliver a long-term future for Prestwick Airport.
Reuben Aitken from Scottish Enterprise said the investment builds on "decades of engineering expertise at Prestwick and the site's role within its global operations".
GE Aerospace designs and builds engines and technology for passenger, military and private aircraft.
The US company also has bases in Cardiff and Hounslow.
In 2025, GE Aerospace also announced a £14.2m investment at its Wales site over three years, to improve infrastructure there.
