FIFA eases sanctions on Argentine players

FIFA has reduced the sanctions imposed on Argentine players.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has appealed to FIFA over the sanctions imposed on team members involved in the scandal that erupted after the 2026 World Cup final. It asked that the suspended players be allowed to serve their suspensions not only in official tournaments, but also in upcoming Category A friendlies.

FIFA's Disciplinary Committee has reviewed the appeal and approved the AFA's request. This means that the suspended players will be able to serve their sentences more quickly and return to the national team.

At the same time, the Argentine Football Association is waiting for FIFA to provide full justification for the sanctions. After that, they plan to appeal to the organization's Appeals Committee. If this does not help, the association's lawyers are ready to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne.

For information, after the end of the 2026 World Cup final, Argentine midfielder Paredes had a fight with Spanish players. The FIFA committee found the Argentine player guilty of three violations and imposed a 10-match suspension and a $ 90,000 fine on him.

Two other players from the Argentine national team were also punished. Noel Molina was suspended for 7 matches and fined $ 90,000, and Thiago Almada was suspended for one match and fined $ 30,000.

The fight took place on July 19 after the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA. Spain won the World Cup after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time thanks to a goal from Ferran Torres.
