Feminist activist and journalist Gloria Steinem dies at 92
Gloria Steinem, who became one of the public faces of the women’s liberation movement in the US, has died at the age of 92, according to her foundation.
In an Instagram post, it said she "passed away peacefully" at her home in New York City, "surrounded by many who loved her".
Steinem, a writer and magazine editor, co-founded the Women's Action Alliance, a group devoted to fighting sexism, more than 50 years ago.
She began her journalism career in New York in the 1970s and later co-founded Ms. magazine, one of the first publications to focus on women’s issues beyond the dangers of housekeeping and the demands of the beauty industry.
During the 1970s, Steinem was among the leading voices advocating for women's reproductive rights.
She welcomed the US Supreme Court's 1973 ruling in Roe v Wade, which gave women the constitutional right to abortion. Nearly half a century later, she saw that decision overturned.
