Famous boxer Prichard Colon has died at the age of 33. He had spent the last eleven years in a wheelchair due to serious injuries sustained in a fight 11 years earlier, Championship reports.
Prichard Colon passed away nearly 11 years after the fight that changed his life. After that fight, which took place on October 17, 2015, the athlete was confined to a wheelchair and lost his ability to speak.
Colon was 23 at the time and was considered one of the most promising young boxers. Before entering professional boxing, he was the champion of Puerto Rico, won a gold medal at the Youth Pan American Games and aspired to qualify for the Olympics. Colon quickly found his place in professional boxing. His record reached 16-0, with only three fights ending in a decision.
His 17th opponent was American Terrell Williams. In the ninth round, Colon received a strong blow to the back of the head and fell. He got up and continued the fight, although his condition had significantly worsened.
After the fight, Colon lost consciousness. At the hospital, doctors discovered a large hemorrhage in his brain. He underwent trepanation to relieve pressure inside the skull and was placed in a medically induced coma.
Colon regained consciousness after 221 days, but he could no longer speak and was almost immobile. His family took care of him for almost 11 years. Prichard Colon was 33 years old.
