Drone strike by Sudan paramilitary kills 41 near Ethiopian border, rights group says
A drone attack carried out by Sudan’s paramilitary forces has killed 41 people in the country’s Blue Nile region near the Ethiopian border, according to a rights group.
Emergency Lawyers said the strike by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) hit a camp for displaced people in the state’s Abu Shandi area on Friday.
It said early reports indicated that most of those killed were women and children.
Since 2023, the Sudanese army and paramilitary forces including the RSF have been engaged in a struggle for power, a conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands and forced more than 14 million people from their homes.
The war has also produced one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with millions in need of medical assistance.
The army holds much of Sudan’s central and eastern regions, while the RSF is based in the western Darfur region and also controls areas in the south.
Both sides have been accused of carrying out drone attacks.
In a statement, Ocha said the area reportedly hit on Friday had been "under sustained atttack in recent weeks, displacing thousands of civilians and exposing many more to grave harm".
