Doctors accused of Maradona's death could face 25 years in prison

Doctors accused of Maradona's death could face up to 25 years in prison.

New details about medical negligence have emerged in the trial of the late Argentine football legend Diego Maradona.

At a hearing in Buenos Aires, nephrologist Hernan Trimarchi said that doctors who treated Maradona failed to pay attention to his serious kidney problems and chronic diseases in a timely manner. The expert said that the player's enlarged kidneys should have been a serious danger signal for a patient who suffered from obesity, cocaine and high blood pressure.

"In such a situation, the patient should have been examined daily, under the constant supervision of a nurse and had regular blood tests," Trimarchi said.

However, he added that Maradona was not given a single blood test during his two-week treatment. In addition, the swelling of the patient's body and changes in blood pressure did not worry the doctors.

The court was also shown photos taken on the eve of the player's death. It can be seen that Maradona's abdomen had become abnormally large due to swelling. According to the conclusion of the forensic examination, the player suffered severely for several hours before his death. Hernan Trimarchi became the third expert to confirm that the doctors made such serious mistakes.

For information, the 1986 World Champion died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60, in a rented house after brain surgery. If the doctors are proven guilty, he could be sentenced to up to 25 years in prison. The trial will last at least until September.
