Diesel prices in NI at highest level since Iran war began

Diesel prices in Northern Ireland have reached their highest point since the Iran conflict started, according to Consumer Council data.

The figures show that over the past week, the average cost of a litre of diesel was 193.3p.

That remains below the record average of 197.2p seen in the summer of 2022, after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, although some filling stations have already been charging £2 a litre.

Before the US-Israeli attack on Iran in February, diesel was costing about 132p a litre.

Data from the UK's Department for Transport indicates that motorists in Northern Ireland depend more heavily on diesel than those in other parts of the UK.

The figures suggest that just over half of private cars on Northern Ireland's roads run on diesel, compared with a UK average of a third.

New diesel car sales in Northern Ireland have dropped sharply in recent years, following a trend seen across the UK.
