Convicted Bosnian Serb war criminal Mladić dies aged 84

He was jailed for life in 2017 for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity during the wars in the ex-Yugoslavia in 1992-95.

Ratko Mladić, the Bosnian Serb war criminal, has passed away at the age of 84 while in a UN prison in The Hague. A UN official verified the news of his death.

Mladić received a life sentence in 2017 for his involvement in genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia from 1992 to 1995.

Following the Bosnian war, Mladić evaded capture for 16 years until he was apprehended in rural Serbia in 2011 and subsequently brought to trial in The Hague.

His conviction, which earned him the moniker "Butcher of Bosnia," was affirmed on appeal in 2021. He was receiving palliative care at the hospital within the UN detention facility in The Hague, where he ultimately died.

In May, a UN court in The Hague denied his request for release from prison, despite his declining health. The judge acknowledged his "dire" condition but determined that he was receiving "comprehensive and compassionate treatment" while incarcerated.
