Construction of a mahalla building on the site of a parking lot in Yunusabad district was abandoned after a newspaper article
A five-story neighborhood building will not be built in place of a parking lot on the 17th floor of Yunusabad. The district governor announced this to residents at a meeting held after the Gazeta article was published. Activists have been trying to overturn the construction decision in court for almost half a year.
Following the newspaper article, a plan to build a mahalla building in Yunusabad district instead of a parking lot was canceled.
On August 4, Gazeta reported that residents of building 17 in Yunusabad district have been suing the Tashkent khokim since March 2026 over the decision of the khokim of Tashkent to build a five-story mahalla center instead of a parking lot in the yard. The case was considered in inter-district and city administrative courts.
On the evening of August 5, a delegation led by the khokim of Yunusabad district, Abrorkhodja Saidaliyev, visited the area. During a meeting with residents, the khokim announced that construction would not take place.
Antonina Mirzayeva, a resident of building 23, told Gazeta that "the khokim said that a multi-story building would not be built, and that the land would be left for a parking lot."
"The interests of the residents and their legitimate objections were fully taken into account," the Yunusabad district administration said in a statement.
During the meeting, residents also raised other issues. One resident suggested building a soccer field in the neighborhood. Others asked to install artificial unevenness due to the high traffic volume along the parking lot and the fact that children and the elderly are often crushed under cars. The mayor promised to send specialists to hold a separate meeting with residents regarding these proposals.
Rano Abdusattorova, the manager of house number 23, also said that the neighborhood committee does not provide assistance to the elderly and people with disabilities.
A court hearing on the residents' revision complaint is scheduled for August 14.
The newspaper will continue to monitor the situation.
Earlier, the publication covered a similar situation - in the Cholpon mahalla of Yashnabad district, residents have been unsuccessfully arguing in court for more than a year against the construction of a mahalla building on the site of a football field. After the newspaper article was published, the district governor met with residents and promised to abandon the project and take their suggestions into account in the improvement work. Two days later, the deep-buried and construction barrier was dismantled.
In the Lolazor mahalla of Mirabad district, after a visit by the head of the Presidential Administration, Saida Mirziyoyeva, the prosecutor's office opened a criminal case against officials of the construction company. They are suspected of falsifying documents and abusing their authority when building on the site of children's and sports fields. The Prosecutor General's Office has been instructed to inspect similar facilities throughout the city.
