Competitor killed in Manx Grand Prix crash named

The 29-year-old died after a crash in Ramsey during qualifying for the event on Tuesday evening.

The competitor who died in a crash during qualifying for the 2026 Manx Grand Prix has been identified as Mauro Poncini, a newcomer to the event.

Poncini, 29, from Caslano, Switzerland, was involved in a two-rider incident at approximately 18:50 BST on Tuesday, during the opening lap of the qualifying session. The crash occurred at Cruickshanks in Ramsey, a section of the Mountain Course that leads to May Hill.

Though new to the Manx Grand Prix, Poncini had prior experience competing at the North West 200 in Northern Ireland.

Race organizers extended their deepest sympathies, stating: "The Manx Grand Prix Races pass on their deepest sympathy to his father Florio, mother Manuela, sister Marzia and girlfriend Sharon, as well as his family and friends." They further noted, "Mauro was an experienced competitor within the Supersport and Supertwin classes, with an established record of competing at a number of road racing events prior to making his Mountain Course debut this year."

The Swiss Moto Federation, the governing body for motorcycle racing in Switzerland, conveyed its "profound shock and immense sadness" at Poncini's passing. They described him as "a man with an extraordinary heart, deeply affectionate toward his loved ones and everyone around him," adding that "Thanks to his warm and open nature, he was well-loved by fellow riders and appreciated by all for his great humanity."

The federation offered its deepest condolences to Poncini's family, friends, fellow riders, and team, characterizing him as a "passionate and deeply committed rider" who "lived his passion wholeheartedly, with courage and absolute dedication." They concluded, "Now - far too soon - that very passion has taken him to the heavens."

Following the crash, the road between Ramsey Bus Station and Lheaney Road in Ramsey was closed for over three hours. Race organizers had previously confirmed that a multi-agency investigative process was initiated, adhering to the event's standard operating procedures.

Qualifying for the 2026 Manx Grand Prix, which runs concurrently with the Classic TT races every August, commenced on Sunday. Both events are scheduled to continue on the 37.7-mile (61km) Mountain Course until August 28.
