China probes use of formaldehyde to keep cabbages fresh
Using the carcinogen to preserve food is prohibited in China, the world's largest producer of cabbages.
Chinese authorities have initiated an inquiry into allegations that formaldehyde is being used to maintain the freshness of cabbages intended for human consumption.
Officials in the northeastern province of Hebei verified video evidence depicting individuals submerging cabbages in a solution prior to loading them onto trucks for transport. This footage was initially released last week by an environmental blogger. The use of formaldehyde, a colorless chemical recognized as a carcinogen, for food preservation is strictly forbidden in China.
China, the world's leading producer of cabbages, exports the majority of its yield to neighboring Asian nations. State media reports indicate that police have taken legal action against those implicated.
Authorities are now acting quickly to avert public alarm and rebuild trust by conducting random inspections in markets nationwide. Chinese state media also stated that investigators will determine the prevalence of this practice and implement measures to track affected vegetables.
In a Saturday statement, local authorities in Kangbao county declared, "Any illegal or non-compliant practices discovered will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law to ensure the safety of the vegetable supply."
Beijing's Xinfadi market, a primary supplier of fresh produce to the capital, released a statement confirming it had investigated the origin of its cabbages and that none of the compromised vegetables had entered its market.
The incident has garnered significant media attention within China. An editorial in the People's Daily commented, "The wholesalers focused solely on their immediate economic interests while completely disregarding the lives and health of consumers. [They] crossed a legal red line and breached the moral bottom line."
China produces over 30 million tons of cabbages annually, accounting for nearly half of the global total. Vietnam, South Korea, and Russia are among the largest importers of Chinese cabbages. The American Cancer Society notes that exposure to relatively high levels of formaldehyde in certain occupational settings has been linked to some human cancers, though the impact of exposure to small quantities is less understood.
