A man in Brazil was arrested for correspondence with ChatGPT, who planned to kill his son. The artificial intelligence informed the police about the person's intentions. This was reported by Bild.

According to reports, the 36-year-old farmer had been communicating with the artificial intelligence for more than two months. During the conversations, he said that he planned to kill his 8-year-old son and himself. As a result, the chatbot's security system was activated, and the police were notified of this threat.

The chain of messages continued internationally. In particular, the man's correspondence raised concerns in the artificial intelligence security system. ChatGPT operator OpenAI warned the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The FBI, in turn, contacted the Brazilian government.

The information was received by the Brazilian Justice Ministry's technology unit, Ciberlab, on June 16. Three days later, police conducted a special operation and arrested the man. Investigators say the man planned to carry out his plan on June 20. He was arrested four days before that date.

According to police, the motive for the planned murder was simple. Namely, the man did not want to pay child support to his son and had little contact with him. During a search of the man's apartment, investigators found four containers and a rope with an unknown substance.

The man was initially arrested, but was released on August 13 after 54 days in custody. The court cited the excessive length of the investigation as the reason for his release. The man is now required to wear an electronic bracelet on his ankle and is also banned from approaching his son and his mother.

“If talking to artificial intelligence and selling nonsense is a crime, then everyone should be imprisoned,” said the man’s lawyer, Pedro Pessi.

It was previously revealed that ChatGPT, after being updated last summer, had been providing instructions to hundreds of users around the world on how to create and use biological weapons and poisons.
