Celebrities and Tax Scandals: Where Were the Millions Hidden?
In Bollywood, receiving millions of rupees for a single film is considered normal. Advertising contracts, production work, overseas events, brand deals... A famous star's annual income can exceed the money an ordinary person earns in their entire lifetime. But as the millions multiply, those interested in them also increase. Sometimes it is fans, and sometimes it is tax collectors...
In India, tax authorities have conducted searches at the homes, offices, and companies of a number of famous actors and actresses. In some cases, official agencies have stated that large amounts of unaccounted income or signs of tax evasion were detected. It is necessary to clarify this: being subjected to a tax audit or having one's home searched does not automatically mean a person's tax evasion has been proven. Some stars have denied the allegations, and some cases later took a different direction.
First, let's look at what a "crore" is. In India, very large sums of money are usually expressed in "crores." 1 crore is 10 million rupees. At the current approximate exchange rate, 1 crore rupees is around 106 thousand US dollars. 100 crores means $10.6 million.
During the pandemic, millions of Indians saw actor Sonu Sood as a hero. He gained great fame by helping workers who were struggling to return home during the coronavirus period. But in 2021, the actor's name made headlines for a completely different reason.
The Income Tax Department searched Sonu Sood's home in Mumbai and other properties associated with him. Following the operation, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes of India claimed that Sonu Sood and associated persons had evaded more than 20 crore rupees—which is approximately 2.1 million dollars—in taxes. Official information stated that some professional receipts were disguised as loans.
On one side is a famous actor helping people, and on the other side is the tax collectors' claim of "20 crores of hidden funds." Sonu Sood, however, took a stance against the allegations in his statements.
In 2021, Taapsee Pannu's name was also involved in a sensational incident related to tax collectors. Her home and properties associated with film director Anurag Kashyap were searched. The investigation was conducted within the framework of tax cases related to Phantom Films. Tax authorities provided information about documents related to a payment of 5 crore rupees, which is approximately 530 thousand dollars. However, Taapsee Pannu herself responded to these reports, casting doubt on the news that she allegedly had a payment receipt for 5 crore rupees. She stated that she had answered the tax collectors' questions and would accept punishment if she had indeed committed a violation. But the legal side of the matter must not be forgotten: a search is not yet a court verdict.
At the same time as Taapsee Pannu, the properties of director Anurag Kashyap were also inspected. Here, it was not about simple acting fees. In film production, millions move through production companies, partnerships, film rights, and various financial transactions. Tax authorities reported large financial discrepancies in the investigation related to Phantom Films. Some reports mentioned issues related to an income of 300 crore rupees (approximately 31.8 million dollars). Later, some media outlets reported that income discrepancies totaling 650 crore rupees (approximately 69 million dollars) were detected within the framework of the investigation.
In 2011, the tax department also conducted a search at the home and offices of Priyanka Chopra, one of Bollywood's most famous actresses. Tax collectors examined financial documents. Shortly thereafter, officials announced that unaccounted assets belonging to the actress worth 6 crore rupees had been detected. This was a huge sum even at the exchange rates of that time, which is around 635 thousand dollars when calculated at today's approximate rate.
Representatives of the Indian Income Tax Department stated that the assets were in various forms and that the investigation was ongoing. The most interesting aspect is that this event occurred during a period when Priyanka's career was just rising to an international level.
In that same year of 2011, Katrina Kaif also did not escape the attention of tax collectors.
Her home and offices were searched, and documents related to financial transactions were seized. However, there is no basis to call Katrina simply a "tax evader" either. In her case, the main event was the tax audit and search. This in itself is not a verdict of guilt.
January 2020. Approximately 7:30 AM. Tax department officials arrived at Rashmika Mandanna's home in Virajpet, Karnataka. At that time, the actress herself was not at home. During the inspection, reports spread about 25 lakh rupees in cash, which is approximately 26.5 thousand dollars, documents, and unaccounted assets worth 3.94 crore rupees—approximately 417 thousand dollars.
Some sources also provided information about unpaid taxes of 1.5 crore rupees—approximately 159 thousand dollars. But an interesting turn occurred in Rashmika's subsequent activities. In 2026, she was mentioned as one of the high taxpayers in her Kodagu region. This means that tax history does not always remain the same.
South Indian cinema star Vijay has also not been left out of tax audits. In 2020, his home was searched. This case was related to the actor's investments in property and his income from films. But the most interesting aspect became known later: the tax department subsequently stated that no serious violations were detected in the search and that Vijay had paid the relevant taxes.
While talking about tax scandals in Bollywood, another side must also be seen. In India, some film stars, on the contrary, are among the largest taxpayers. For example, reports about Shah Rukh Khan stated that he paid 92 crore rupees, which is approximately 9.7 million dollars, in taxes in one year. It is not difficult to imagine what his annual income would be.
In Bollywood, the cameras turn off. The movie ends. But tax reporting never ends with the "credits."
