**Canadian Prime Minister Admits Country is Preparing for War with the US**

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney admitted that Ottawa is preparing for a potential US attack on the country, including the development of various defense scenarios. He stated that this work has been ongoing over the past year following threats from United States President Donald Trump.

The Prime Minister spoke about this in an interview with The New York Times. When asked how seriously Ottawa took Trump's threats to turn Canada into the "51st state," Carney said the government had carefully considered the possibility of an invasion.

"A person in this position must consider any unexpected emergency scenarios. This is risk management. Of course, this is not the main plan, but it would be irresponsible not to prepare for it," Carney said.

**Ottawa is Reducing Dependence on the US**

According to the Prime Minister, such threats have forced Canada to drastically reduce its dependence on the US. In particular, Canada plans to completely abandon Elon Musk's Starlink satellite communication system.

The country is also considering the option of choosing European aircraft, including Sweden's Saab Gripen fighters, for Arctic defense instead of purchasing 88 US F-35 fighter jets.

**Economic and Political Disagreements**

Relations between the US and Canada deteriorated sharply in 2025 after Trump imposed 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods. Threats to national security and drug smuggling were cited as the reasons for this.

In August 2026, the countries imposed tariffs of over 50 percent on each other's products. This occurred after trade negotiations between the parties collapsed at the last minute due to the stance of US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

In September, the European Union invited Canada to become its first-ever associate member. US President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with this proposal and threatened to increase tariffs against the European Union. Trump has repeatedly promoted the idea of annexing Canada into the US, calling it the 51st state.
