Burning the battery, measuring radiation levels, and stepping on the gas: How did CHERY expose the false notions about hybrids?

What happens to a hybrid car battery if it is exposed to fire? How safe is it to be near a high-voltage system? Does a few hundred kilograms of extra weight really make a car a ridiculously "heavyweight" car?

Battery burnout, radiation levels and gas pressure: how did CHERY dispel misconceptions about hybrids?

On August 12, it was decided to answer these questions without presentations and technical diagrams at the ADM Jizzakh plant. The Chery brand publicly tested its hybrid technologies using speed, measuring instruments and fire. Journalists and bloggers were invited to the event "Expose Misconceptions", where three common concerns surrounding hybrid cars were transformed into three practical tests.

The first misconception: the battery is extra weight, which means that dynamics are lost.

Depending on the model, the weight of the traction battery is approximately 175–225 kilograms. On paper, this figure is much larger, and a logical question arises: if a car constantly carries such extra weight, won't it become slower and more clumsy? Participants were invited to get the answer inside the car.

The secret is not that the engineers managed to somehow "hide" the mass of the battery, it does not disappear anywhere. The battery pack is placed under the floor of the car, so the center of gravity is lower, which helps maintain the stability of the car and reduce deflections in turns. The electric part of the power unit provides power in the same mode that a classic internal combustion engine cannot provide: traction is created almost instantly. Therefore, the paradox of the hybrid is that a heavy battery does not make the car feel "heavy".

The second misconception: the electromagnetic field of a hybrid is dangerous for passengers.

High voltage, electric motors, battery, electronic technology - for someone who has never understood the structure of a hybrid, this set can seem really alarming. One of the fears associated with electrified cars is related to the electromagnetic field: how safe is it to spend hours every day in a car surrounded by electronics? During the test, the participants were not offered to take the engineers' word for it, but were provided with the appropriate devices. The level of electromagnetic fields was measured directly inside the cars - so the participants could independently see the indicators and compare them with conventional electronic devices.

"The trip was very productive and truly impressive. We watched the results of hybrid cars accelerating to 100 km/h, while the tests were carried out in conditions of high air temperature.

A particularly interesting aspect was the checking of the level of electromagnetic radiation using a special device. The measurements showed that the indicators were within the permissible limits. It was also possible to observe the battery test at a temperature of about 850 ° C. Despite the high temperature, the battery did not catch fire."

High-voltage wires in hybrids are additionally sheathed and insulated, and the metal elements of the structure additionally prevent the spread of the electromagnetic field into the cabin. Information that is usually recorded in the technical documentation of the car could now be seen on the display of the measuring instrument.

The third misconception: the battery can catch fire or explode.

It is this fear that probably has a stronger influence on the distrust of electric cars and hybrids than any other. Therefore, the third test was the most intense stage of the day. The battery was exposed to extreme heat in front of all participants.

"I have never participated in such an event. Here we not only tested cars, but also observed with our own eyes how the battery withstands the effects of high temperatures. During the test, we witnessed that the battery of a Chery hybrid car did not burn out.

Another interesting test was measuring the level of electromagnetic radiation. We often hear that there is radiation dangerous to human health in the cabin of electric cars and hybrid cars. We checked this ourselves using a special device and saw that the level of electromagnetic fields measured in a Chery hybrid car did not exceed the established standards. Such practical tests help to form a clearer picture of new technologies."

In a regular car, the car owner never sees most of the processes that occur inside the traction battery every second. They are monitored by the BMS - the battery management system. It controls the temperature, voltage and other parameters of the system. If the temperature begins to exceed the permissible limits, the electronics have the ability to limit power, start the cooling system and, in an emergency, turn off the high-voltage circuit. Active liquid cooling of the battery plays an additional role, and it is the combination of several levels of protection that should prevent a single emergency from starting a chain reaction.

There are enough reasons for hybrid technologies in numbers. Chery SUPER HYBRID cars are capable of covering more than 1,200 km in combined mode, fast charging allows you to charge the battery from 30% to 80% in about 20 minutes, and the warranty for the traction battery and electric motor is 8 years or 160 thousand kilometers.

But the main question surrounding the new technology today is not what it is capable of, but how much it can be trusted.

That is why the format of "Exploding Misconceptions" turned out to be more important than the usual presentation. The CHERY brand did not bypass the most uncomfortable questions about hybrids - on the contrary, it made them the central part of the event and allowed participants to see the answers firsthand.
