Bukhara will host representatives of 408 creative cities around the world at an international UNESCO conference
In 2027, Bukhara will host the 19th annual conference of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. Representatives of city administrations, cultural figures, artisans, and experts from various countries will come to the ancient city to discuss how creativity and cultural heritage contribute to the development of modern cities.
UNESCO announced the selection of Bukhara on October 30, on the eve of World Cities Day, which is celebrated today, October 31. The city has been a member of the Creative Cities Network since 2023 in the "Crafts and Folk Art" category.
According to the organizers, the conference will serve as a platform for sharing experience and developing joint solutions. Participants will discuss support for local communities and the development of the creative economy. Special attention will be paid to how cultural potential can create new jobs and attract tourists.
The choice of Bukhara is not accidental. The city is famous for its architectural monuments and centuries-old craft traditions, which remain part of daily life and the local economy today. Here, artisans are supported, traditional skills are passed on to new generations, and cooperation with educational and design organizations is developed.
One example of cultural development is the Bukhara Biennial of Contemporary Art, which brings together traditions, new artistic practices, and international exchange.
The UNESCO Creative Cities Network was created in 2004. Today, it includes 408 cities that develop culture and creative industries as an important part of urban policy and cooperate with each other internationally.
The conference program includes thematic discussions, cultural events, and a mayors' forum. Such meetings help cities share experience, launch joint projects, and find new partners.
Before Bukhara, the meeting will be hosted by the Moroccan city of Essaouira — in November 2026, a conference under the motto "Cultural Innovation for Sustainable Urban Development" will take place there.
, as of October 1, the movement of electric scooters, electric mopeds, mopeds, and a number of other modes of transport has been restricted in the historic part of Bukhara. This also applies to rickshaws, four-wheeled bicycles, go-karts, and riding on horses and camels.
