Body found in search for man missing on hike

A body has been discovered during the search for a man who vanished while hiking in the Romanian mountains, prompting an outpouring of tributes for the beloved individual.

George Smyth, 18, a University of Bristol student originally from Shropshire, had been missing since November 23 in the Bucegi mountains. Despite continuous daily searches, Brașov Mountain Rescue confirmed that a body was found.

Avon and Somerset Police stated they received notification from Romanian authorities about the discovery in the region. While formal identification is pending, it is believed to be Mr. Smyth.

His family released a statement saying, "We are all devastated by George's death. He was the best of us and is deeply missed by his younger brothers, family and friends."

They extended their gratitude, adding, "We want to thank Salvamont Mountain Rescue, who have worked tirelessly since November searching for George; despite very difficult and often dangerous conditions. They are an amazing team, and have remained in constant communication, helping us greatly throughout this awful time."

The family also acknowledged the support from Avon and Somerset Police and the University of Bristol, stating, "We would also like to thank Avon and Somerset Police and University of Bristol, who have gone above and beyond to try and find George, and to support us as a family."

"Although this latest news is incredibly painful, the torture of waiting is finally over, so we can now focus on bringing George home and saying goodbye. We would appreciate privacy while we continue to come to terms with this loss," they concluded.

Before his disappearance, Smyth had contacted rescuers from Tiganesti, reporting that he was disoriented and physically exhausted. Rescuers at the time described his location as a "very isolated and hard-to-access mountain area" with severe weather conditions, including strong winds, heavy snowfall, and dense fog.

Upon learning of his disappearance, Haberdashers' Adams in Newport, Smyth's former school, expressed deep concern: "We are deeply concerned and saddened to learn that our much-loved and cherished former student, George Smyth, has been reported missing while hiking in the Bucegi Mountain Range in Romania."

Newport (Salop) RUFC, George's Rugby Club, had been closely following the search efforts and providing verified updates. They previously highlighted his valuable contribution to the club, stating, "George is a much-loved member of our club. He grew up through our junior section, represented our Colts last season, and has often given his time wholeheartedly to help coach our younger age groups."

Police confirmed that forensic investigations would be conducted to confirm the identity, followed by efforts to repatriate the body to Bristol.

"George's family have expressed their sincere gratitude to everyone who has supported in the search for George, especially those in Romania, but they now request privacy and time to process and grieve," police added.
