BGR Identifies Xiaomi and TCL Among Brands with Limited Software Support

Chinese smartphone makers Xiaomi, TCL, and RedMagic, along with American brand Motorola, have been cited by tech publication BGR as having some of the shortest software support durations for their devices.
BGR's analysis of the smartphone market focused on the length of time manufacturers provide software updates. Motorola was included because it offers only two years of new Android version releases, a policy that BGR noted extends even to its premium models.
Xiaomi also made the list. While certain flagship Xiaomi phones are slated to receive up to five years of update support, BGR reported that most of the company's smartphones typically get only two major Android updates. Journalists did point out that Xiaomi devices are considerably more affordable than many rival models.
China's TCL, known mainly for its mid-range smartphones, was another brand on the list. BGR observed that software support for TCL devices does not extend beyond two years.
RedMagic completed the ranking, with its smartphones receiving just two major Android updates. The authors found this support window particularly noteworthy given that RedMagic specializes in high-priced gaming smartphones.
Separately, in early August, How-To Geek published its own report on mobile device specifications. Its journalists advised against using excessively long charging cables, recommending lengths of up to three meters, as longer cables can result in power loss and overheating.
