Banks are still declining credit card applications, watchdog says

The Government of Jersey said whether credit cards were available to islanders "remains a commercial decision"

Islanders are still having difficulty obtaining credit cards despite changes to personal data rules intended to make applications easier, a consumer council has said.

The changes, which took effect on 30 July, allowed the government to securely share personal data with UK credit reference agencies, which had been regarded as the main obstacle to successful applications.

However, the Jersey Consumer Council said several providers were still turning down applications and urged the government to work more closely with businesses and banks.

A spokesperson for Jersey's government said it had "engaged with providers throughout this process" and whether products were offered in the island "remains a commercial decision".

Carl Walker from the Jersey Consumer Council said credit card companies may need persuading to bring their business back.

Carl Walker, from Jersey Consumer Council, said credit card companies would need to be reminded of the change which had allowed more information to be shared.

"The last time they were involved... Jersey was slamming the door shut, so they have switched off and turned their attention elsewhere," he said.

"We're pushing the government to write them an official letter to say this piece of legislation has now changed, Jersey's now open for business... and then leave it up to them whether they decide they to come back or not."

A spokesperson said the government had "successfully delivered a project to share islanders' data with credit reference agencies".

"This was a key issue identified by the industry as an obstacle to providing credit cards in Jersey," they said.

"It remains a commercial decision for providers to decide whether to offer their products or services, including credit cards, in Jersey.

"The government has engaged with providers throughout this process... and will continue to do so."
