Baltic states requested half a billion euros from the European Union for drone defense — Media

The defense ministers of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia have appealed to the European Commission, requesting an urgent allocation of 500 million euros for defense against drones.

According to the publication that reviewed the letter, the ministers emphasized that the threat from the Russian side has significantly intensified in recent months. The authors of the letter hope that the additional funding for anti-drone defense systems will be allocated by the end of 2026.

According to the publication's sources, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has received the defense ministers' letter. It is currently unknown when the European Commission will respond to it.

In recent months, drones have repeatedly violated the airspace of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. In some cases, they turned out to be Ukrainian drones that had lost their course under the influence of Russian electronic warfare systems.

On the night of September 15, a Russian drone that had participated in an attack on Ukraine and veered off course was shot down over Lithuanian territory. According to Lithuanian authorities, the drone contained explosives.
