Bali police investigate after Australian man and children found dead in home

Police were called after the man's wife became concerned and asked neighbours to check on her family.

Bali police are investigating after an Australian man and his two children were found dead in their bungalow in a popular tourist area.

Damien John Shaw, 56, and his children, a six-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl, were discovered dead at their home in Kuta on Sunday.

Police said neighbours checked on the family after a call from the man’s wife, who had grown worried following a phone conversation with her husband. She was not in Bali at the time.

Australian media reported that police were treating the case as a suspected murder-suicide. However, police told the BBC they had not yet established the cause or manner of death, and said further examinations would be conducted.

Police said the man’s wife had phoned a neighbour after hearing one of her children crying while she was speaking to her husband. She was then unable to reach him again.

His wife had reportedly travelled to the capital, Jakarta, in the previous days.

Police said the neighbour, together with other local residents, forced entry into the property after there was no answer to their knocks. The three victims were found inside.

Police said Shaw was originally from Fremantle in Western Australia. Roger Cook, the state’s premier, called the news a "very confronting situation".

"This is a very sad situation; our hearts go out to everyone involved. We hope we can get to the bottom of what's gone on as soon as possible," he added.
