Ancient Samarkand will gain new borders and approach the status of a city with a population of over a million.

The ancient city of Samarkand is preparing for a significant expansion of its administrative boundaries, bringing it closer to achieving the status of a city with a population of over one million. The Senate of Uzbekistan approved corresponding changes in the Samarkand Region, providing for an increase in the city's territory and the abolition of the district of the same name.

According to the adopted document, Samarkand will receive over 17,000 hectares of land. The Samarkand District will be abolished, and nearly 28,000 hectares of its territory will become part of the Taylak District.

Following these changes, Samarkand's population is expected to reach approximately 880,000. This will not only bring the city closer to achieving the status of a city with a population of over one million but will also open up new opportunities for the creation of industrial zones, technology parks, and the development of service projects.

It is important to note that agricultural land will retain its intended purpose: the category of 6,300 hectares of land being transferred will remain unchanged. This will ensure that the interests of the agricultural sector are taken into account and the ecological balance of the region is maintained.

This decision is aimed at strengthening Samarkand's position as a major tourist and economic hub. Authorities expect the city's expansion to address dense development, improve the road network, and create modern infrastructure. Furthermore, the changes are intended to enhance Samarkand's investment and tourism appeal, facilitate the creation of new jobs, and improve the living conditions of residents.

Plans to change the boundaries of Samarkand and the Samarkand and Akdarya districts have previously been announced. Once the new boundaries are approved, plans are in place to build an elevated metro, roads, bridges, and utility tunnels, as well as a modern business center.
