An international grave digging competition was organized at one of the cemeteries in Hungary. This may seem unusual, but on September 5, 38 participants took up hoes and shovels to compete.

The competition was organized by the Hungarian Association of Cemetery Maintenance and Operators. Its goal is to showcase the profession of grave digging and its skills, as well as to change perceptions about death.

The dry and hot soil at the cemetery in the town of Nyergesújfalu in northern Hungary became a serious test for the 19 teams. The two-person teams worked with all their might to dig the fastest and most beautiful grave.

"Speed is the main thing here, not beauty," said Robert Nagy, a member of the winning duo, alongside his teammate László Kiss.

"When you are digging a grave for a funeral, you have to be very attentive to its exact dimensions and ensure it looks neat," he added.

According to the rules of the competition, the grave had to be 1.6 meters deep, 2 meters long, and 0.8 meters wide. The winning team succeeded by digging the grave in 1 hour and 21 minutes. The winners shared a cash prize of 200,000 Hungarian forints (approximately 640 dollars).

For safety reasons, only one person from each team was allowed to work inside the grave at a time. The second member of the team could clear and organize the excavated soil. However, they were not allowed to enter the grave.
