American who robbed a bank using ChatGPT sentenced to 10 years
A Nebraska (US) court sentenced 23-year-old Deron Lewis-Payne of Omaha to 121 months in prison for robbery with a gun, the Nebraska District Attorney's Office reported.
According to the agency, on February 10, 2026, Lewis-Payne entered an i3Bank branch in Omaha, threatened employees with a Llama Mini-Max pistol and demanded money. As a result, he took about $ 9,175 in cash and fled the scene. He spent the money at the mall. The attacker was identified by video surveillance cameras and his brightly colored clothing.
The suspect tried to escape by throwing some of the stolen money along with a bank roll during his arrest. During a search of his home, police found the car he had driven to the bank and most of his clothes. Investigators found correspondence with ChatGPT on the attacker's phone - this previously convicted person was interested in the police's response time to emergency calls, as well as the methods of disassembling and repairing a pistol. The police were able to return some of the stolen money.
In August 2025, an American was hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital for compulsory treatment after consuming bromide instead of salt for three months, which led to psychosis. In October 2025, a schoolboy was arrested in the United States for asking ChatGPT for help in planning the murder of a classmate during class. The teenager explained that he wanted to scare his peer as a joke.
