In Kazakhstan's Mangystau region, 12 military personnel died during naval exercises being conducted in the Caspian Sea. The search for another two servicemen is ongoing. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared September 25 as a day of national mourning.

According to DW, the administration of the Mangystau region reported this tragedy on September 24.
Due to a sharp deterioration in the weather and strengthening winds, 17 military personnel were swept away by the sea. Three of them were rescued, and 12 died.
The condition of the serviceman taken to a medical facility after the incident is said to be stable, and his life is not in danger.
Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Kanat Bozumbayev held a meeting of the government commission. Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Sanjar Adilov stated that a criminal case has been initiated regarding negligence in service leading to grave consequences and violation of navigation rules.
Investigation and operational-search activities, as well as expert examinations, are being conducted to identify the guilty parties.
The authorities announced that social and financial assistance will be provided to the families of the deceased military personnel.
The "Caspian Defense - 2026" exercises have been underway since September 22. More than 500 military personnel, including crews of warships and coastal units, are participating in them.
The forces and assets of the Coast Guard of the Border Service of the National Security Committee for the Mangystau region, as well as the Air Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan, are also involved in the exercises. Their task is to increase the level of combat readiness and cooperation between the forces.
