Trust is gone: European countries are withdrawing their gold from the US

No cow like one's own
European states are withdrawing gold from the US, British newspaper Financial Times reports.
In 2026, the Central Bank of the Netherlands (DNB) moved 86 tons of gold reserves in bullion from vaults in the US and Canada to London and its own vaults. This operation, carried out between March and August, is attributed to rising geopolitical instability and the desire to reduce the risks of storing assets overseas. Now, part of the gold reserves has been sent to London, and another part to the national vault in the Netherlands.
Earlier, the Bank of France fully completed the withdrawal and repatriation of its gold reserves from the US. Between July 2025 and January 2026, Paris withdrew and sold the last 129 tons of gold that were stored at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Now, France's entire gold reserve — 2,437 tons, ranking 4th in the world — is located within the country.
