Nearly 80 illegal migrants who attempted to reach the Canary Islands by boat from Gambia have died. Sky News reported this on Thursday, citing the Spanish maritime rescue service.
"We have established that about 80 of the 128 immigrants who traveled on the boat have died," the channel reported, quoting the Spanish state service.
Earlier, the Spanish maritime rescue service stated that one of its aircraft had spotted a vessel sailing approximately 120 kilometers south of Gran Canaria the previous day. According to Sky News, the vessel carried a group of illegal migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa.

The agency notes that in recent years, tens of thousands of illegal migrants have died or gone missing while attempting to reach the Canary Islands. Some boats have lost their way and drifted across the Atlantic Ocean to the coasts of North and South America.
