Colombia and Ecuador hit by 7.4-magnitude earthquake

A powerful earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10 was felt not only in the South American country but also in neighboring Ecuador. This situation forced residents to leave their homes and buildings, reports The Hill.

According to the US Geological Survey and the Colombian agency, the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.4 and occurred at a considerable depth. Both organizations said that the epicenter of the earthquake was in the San Jose del Palmar area, located about 400 kilometers west of the Colombian capital, Bogota. So far, authorities have not reported any damage or casualties.

This earthquake followed a series of earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 in Venezuela in late June. The earthquakes that occurred at that time destroyed hundreds of buildings and killed more than 5,000 people.
