Zendaya on working with Tom Holland in Spider-Man: ‘When you’re best friends it’s easy’
The couple walked the white carpet at the London premiere of their latest film, Spiderman: Brand New Day.
Zendaya shared her perspective on collaborating with her husband, Tom Holland, in the *Spider-Man* films, stating, "When you’re best friends it’s easy."
The prominent Hollywood couple, Tom Holland and Zendaya, have been a consistent presence on red carpets throughout the summer. On Wednesday evening, they attended the London premiere of their latest film, *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, drawing a large crowd of fans eager to see two of the world's most popular young stars.
It has been a busy period for the recently married couple, who are also featured in Christopher Nolan's blockbuster, *The Odyssey*. When BBC News inquired about her advice for working alongside her husband, Zendaya responded, “I think when you’re best friends, it’s pretty easy.”
Holland reprises his role as Peter Parker and his superhero alter-ego in this installment, while Zendaya portrays his on-screen love interest, MJ.
Zendaya captivated attention at the event in a floor-length Tamara Ralph champagne silk crepe gown, featuring spider web-like straps, which complemented the white carpet in Leicester Square. The 29-year-old has been a significant figure in the fashion world recently, known for her "method dressing" approach where actors align their attire with the themes of their films.
Posing for photographs at the premiere, Zendaya, a recognized fashion icon in Hollywood, discussed her collaboration with her stylist, Law Roach. She remarked, “I love these films, I love making them, I love being able to extend the filmmaking process and the storytelling process through the press tour and the clothes and through fashion.” When asked if her latest dress contained any clues about the film's plot, she laughed and replied, “I can’t say that. Read into it how you will!”
Holland, who has embodied the role of Spider-Man since 2016, told BBC News that being on the set of the new film was "really fun." He added, "We've played these characters for ten years, we've loved every minute of it. Any time you're playing a character and there's something new and fresh to bring to the table, it's always so welcome, and it was just like a really fun acting exercise."
Holland, 30, wore a burgundy Louis Vuitton suit and a spider brooch. He remained evasive when questioned about whether this marks the conclusion of his tenure as Spider-Man, stating, "You're going to have to watch this movie and that might answer your question." However, he expressed an "endless" desire to collaborate with other characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "I feel so blessed to be a part of this world and I've been so lucky to share the screen with so many people," he said. "There's loads of characters I'd love to work with in the future."
The film introduces new cast members, including *Stranger Things* star Sadie Sink, who joins the franchise in a highly confidential, undisclosed role. While online discussions have been rife with theories about her character, Sink, who did not attend the premiere, has not revealed any details.
In the previous film, Peter Parker voluntarily erased himself from the memories of his loved ones. Consequently, in *Brand New Day*, Parker must navigate a world where his closest friends and girlfriend no longer recognize him.
*Spider-Man: Brand New Day* also features Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo, and is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Initial reviews have been largely positive. Clarisse Loughrey of *The Independent* hailed it as "the best Spider-Man movie in more than 20 years," awarding it four stars. Robbie Collin of *The Telegraph* also gave it four stars, noting that it "restores the gawkiness the franchise has been missing." David Rooney of *The Hollywood Reporter* commented that the film “balances self-reflection with action.” *The Guardian*'s Peter Bradshaw offered a more mixed review, giving it three stars and crediting Zendaya with "saving" the film.
The previous *Spider-Man* film, *No Way Home* (2021), was a significant box office success, grossing $1.9 billion worldwide.
*Spider-Man: Brand New Day* is currently showing in UK cinemas.
