What is Trump Media's Truth API and why is it controversial?
Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) has set up a paid service to give Wall Street firms access to Truth Social's most influential accounts.

**Trump Media's Truth API: A Controversial Move to Monetize Early Access to Social Posts**
Donald Trump's statements have long been a focal point for financial traders, with his pronouncements on everything from trade disputes to military conflicts capable of swaying markets in an instant. This has led to a sophisticated ecosystem of human traders and automated computer systems meticulously monitoring his every word to execute trades within seconds. Now, Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) is seeking to capitalize on this demand by offering a paid service, Truth API, that provides "fastest access" to market-moving information originating from its Truth Social platform.
**What is Truth API?**
Truth API is a new data feed designed to deliver real-time access to posts from Truth Social's "highest-ranking accounts" in "milliseconds." While TMTG has not explicitly stated that the service includes the former president's account, his approximately 13 million followers, the most on the platform, strongly suggest his posts would be among the most influential. The service was slated to become available to institutional clients on August 1st, with reports from the Financial Times, though unconfirmed by TMTG, suggesting a potential monthly charge of up to $100,000 for high-speed access. TMTG anticipates Truth API will generate a consistent new revenue stream for the currently unprofitable company.
**Target Audience and Market Impact**
While accessible to anyone, Truth API is primarily tailored for high-frequency and algorithmic trading firms, which TMTG identifies as those "most impacted by the cost of a delay in information." These firms rely on automated electronic systems and algorithms to execute trades at speeds and volumes far exceeding human capabilities, often aiming for small profits on individual transactions that accumulate into substantial returns through sheer speed and scale.
**Ethical and Legal Concerns**
The introduction of Truth API has ignited a flurry of legal and ethical debates. A central question revolves around the propriety of a company, in which the former president's family holds a majority stake, profiting from his public statements.
Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren and Adam Schiff have formally requested that the US securities regulator investigate whether Truth API violates existing laws. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has acknowledged receipt of the letter but has not commented on whether an investigation will be launched.
The potential for insider trading, an illegal practice involving market trades based on non-public information, has also been raised. A TMTG spokesperson, in response to the Senators' letter, accused them of "mischaracterising Truth API" due to "ideological opposition to free markets or a failure to grasp the distinction between public and nonpublic information." TMTG further asserted that the Senators "must have invented a new theory of 'insider trading' based on publicly available information."
Richard Painter, a former ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush, expressed his belief to the BBC that selling official US government information on the platform before it becomes public knowledge could be classified as insider trading. He stated he would threaten to resign as an SEC commissioner if the plan wasn't halted or if posts related to US government business were included.
**Industry Reception and Precedent**
Despite the controversy, TMTG claims to have registered customers in advance of the launch, though it has not disclosed the number. Joe Saluzzi, co-founder of Themis Trading, told the BBC that Truth API would be "worthless" to firms lacking the complex systems required for "nanosecond level fast" transactions. He suggested that high-frequency trading firms (HFTs) would be the most likely subscribers, driven by both profit potential and the fear of being at a disadvantage if competitors sign up. Saluzzi emphasized that the service is not for retail or even sophisticated institutional investors, but rather for high-speed traders with established, multi-million dollar systems.
Major US investment banks and high-frequency trading firms, including Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Citadel Securities, and Jane Street, either declined to comment or did not respond when asked by the BBC about their plans to subscribe. Saluzzi noted, "Nobody wants to talk about this stuff."
Saluzzi also pointed out that numerous other data providers, news organizations, and stock exchanges offer similar services, establishing a "precedent" for TMTG. However, he added, "There's a different story when it comes to ethics."
**Profit and Perceived Abuse of Office**
Donald Trump, who holds approximately 41% of Trump Media through a trust overseen by his children, stands to directly profit from Truth API. Senators Warren and Schiff, in their letter to the SEC, characterized the service as "an outrageous abuse of the President's office for his personal benefit that undermines everyday investors and the integrity of our markets, while enriching Wall Street and other wealthy insiders."
