Sophia Laforteza is taking a break from Katseye, making her the second member to step away from the group this year.
The vocalist for the popular girl group, Sophia Laforteza, has revealed she will be temporarily withdrawing due to mental health issues. This announcement follows less than six months after her bandmate, Manon Bannerman, also declared a hiatus from the ensemble, celebrated for international hits like "Gnarly," "Pinky Up," and "Gabriela."
HYBE x Geffen Records issued a statement confirming that Laforteza "will be temporarily unable to participate in upcoming promotional activities." The label acknowledged the anticipation of EYEKONS (fans) to see Sophia perform, but emphasized the critical importance of prioritizing her mental health and well-being.
According to the label, the Filipino-American star has been receiving "the utmost support" and consulting with medical professionals. She has been advised to commit to "extended rest and ongoing care to ensure a full recovery." The statement further noted that while Sophia herself is keen to perform with her fellow members, the health, safety, and long-term well-being of their artists are always the highest priority. Her condition is slated for reassessment in September.
Formed in 2023 with six members, the girl group garnered two Grammy Award nominations last year. They will now proceed with events as a quartet. The group has previously disclosed that its members have been subjected to numerous online death threats since their debut.
In February, the label announced that Katseye member Bannerman would also be taking a temporary break to focus on her health and well-being. She has not yet returned, though their label has stated that the option for her return remains open. The 23-year-old Swiss singer assured fans she was "healthy" and "taking care of myself." The group indicated that this decision was reached after "open and thoughtful conversations together."
