PSG may part ways with Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov

The French club PSG is considering parting ways with Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov in the summer of 2027. This was reported by the French publication L’Equipe.

According to the source, the management of the Parisian club plans to reorganize the goalkeepers next summer. The club may part ways with either Safonov or French goalkeeper Luca Chevalier. However, the final decision will not be made before the summer of 2027.

PSG is also expected to sign Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from the Italian club Parma in the coming days. It is noted that after the transfer is completed, the player will immediately be sent on loan to another club to gain regular playing practice. After his return to PSG, a final decision will be made on who will be the team’s main goalkeeper.

Matvey Safonov joined PSG from Russian club Krasnodar in the summer of 2024. During this time, he played 43 matches for the Parisian club, conceding 40 goals and keeping 19 clean sheets.

Safonov overtook Luca Chevalier in the fight for the starting lineup last season. Chevalier was previously seen as a possible candidate to replace Italian Gianluigi Donnarumma as the first-choice goalkeeper.

The Russian goalkeeper's current contract with PSG runs until the summer of 2029. However, his future could be reviewed depending on the club's long-term plans for goalkeepers.

Safonov previously received medical treatment after a collision with teammate Marquinhos in the UEFA Champions League final against Arsenal. Despite this, he continued to compete and contributed to PSG's victory.
