Prosecutors uncover large-scale asphalt embezzlement in two regions

Officials from the road maintenance departments in Sharof Rashidov district of Jizzakh region and Parkent district of Tashkent region are under investigation for allegedly embezzling asphalt and misappropriating budget funds allocated for road paving.

Large-scale asphalt embezzlement has been uncovered in two separate regions, prosecutors report.

The Department under the Prosecutor General's Office conducted a pre-investigation inquiry in Sharof Rashidov district, revealing that officials from the district Road Maintenance Department reportedly neglected to complete asphalt paving on six internal roads. Instead, they are accused of selling 634 tonnes of asphalt, valued at UZS 348.7 million, for cash and diverting the funds for personal use.

In an unrelated incident in Parkent district, officials from the local Road Maintenance Department are alleged to have conspired to embezzle UZS 324 million in budget allocations. Investigators state that these officials approved falsified invoices from G.W. LLC for the supply of 540 tonnes of asphalt, despite the material never being delivered. The funds were reportedly misappropriated through this scheme.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated in both instances under Article 167 of the Criminal Code, pertaining to the embezzlement and misappropriation of property. The investigations are ongoing.
