Over 110 drownings logged in six months as youth fatalities trigger public outcry

A alarming surge in drowning deaths throughout Uzbekistan, particularly among children and adolescents, has ignited considerable public outrage and a nationwide discussion. The Ministry of Emergency Situations press service reported that a shocking 111 individuals drowned within the first half of 2026 alone.

Among the victims were three underage girls in Jizzakh, three people who drowned while trying to swim in the Zarafshan River, and two young children in the Bostanliq district. Additionally, three 18-year-olds drowned in Surxondaryo, four children died in Samarkand, and a single family in Fergana tragically lost two of their children to the water.

Online activists and commentators are attributing these incidents to systemic structural deficiencies, asserting that a severe lack of local public swimming facilities compels citizens, especially children, to seek respite from the summer heat in dangerous, fast-flowing open waterways. This infrastructure deficit is now under increasing public scrutiny.
