Missile that left crater deep inside Poland was probably Russian - Polish PM
The unidentified object caused a 10m-wide (33ft) crater a short distance from the village of Tarnawa Kolonia, about 100km from the border with Ukraine during a Russian attack on the city of Lviv.
A missile that created a deep crater in Poland was likely Russian, according to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The projectile landed near the village of Tarnawa Kolonia, deep within Polish territory.
Tusk stated that an object crashing into a field in eastern Poland early Thursday morning was probably a Russian missile. The unidentified object left a 10-meter (33-foot) wide crater a short distance from Tarnawa Kolonia, approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the Ukrainian border. This occurred during a Russian assault on the city of Lviv.
"All indications point to it being a Russian Kh-101 ballistic missile, but we want to be 100% certain about the type of missile and who launched it," Tusk remarked during a specially convened meeting in nearby Lublin.
Earlier on Thursday, Ukraine's acting Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha had asserted that a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile "crossed into Poland as part of Russia's massive strike against Ukraine, violating Nato airspace."
Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, several Russian drones and one unarmed Russian missile have landed in Poland.
Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz reported that around 20 objects were observed near Polish airspace overnight. Pyrotechnical analysis is underway to identify the object that fell near Tarnawa Kolonia.
Poland's military detected the object at approximately 03:40 on Thursday (01:40 GMT) and dispatched an F-16 fighter jet to intercept it. However, the object vanished from radar systems minutes later.
Air raid sirens sounded in Lublin and Krasnystaw, further to the south-east, due to Russian airstrikes that claimed eight lives in neighboring Ukraine. Residents in Tarnawa Kolonia reported hearing a loud bang around 04:00, and police located the crash site about an hour later.
Tusk confirmed no casualties were reported, but the incident is being treated as serious.
The Polish leader had met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Lublin the previous evening, as Zelensky was returning from discussions with US President Donald Trump.
